The greatest uncertainty in projecting future sea-level rise lies in predicting melt contributions from Earth’s remaining ice sheets. Our observational period is short (only the last century at best!), and thus we have an incomplete understanding of how ice sheets and sea level changes over 100s and 1000s of years under different temperature and CO2 forcing.
To broaden this observational window we turn to the geological record which provides valuable archives of how ice sheets and sea level have responded to past climate variability. The information contained in the geological record can therefore help evaluate the relationship between ice sheets, sea level and climate change, and provide constraints for projecting future changes.
The PALSEA working group brings together observational scientists and ice-sheet, climate, and sea-level modelers in order to better define observational constraints on past sea-level change and improve our understanding of ice-sheet responses to rapid climate change.

Since 2008, PALSEA has organized annual meetings, where both senior scientists and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) are welcome to present their research and share new ideas. Our annual meetings are the ideal forum where ECRs can approach senior scientists in their field and exchange ideas in an informal setting.
